State Great Khural of Mongolia and Inter-Parliamentary Union Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Ulaanbaatar, March 28, 2024. /MONTSAME/. The 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) took place on March 23-27, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Deputy Chairman of the State Great Khural of Mongolia Munkhbaatar Lkhagva met with Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungon. The two sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation between the State Great Khural of Mongolia and the IPU. During the meeting, Deputy Chairman L. Munkhbaatar and Secretary-General Chungon signed an agreement to extend the Memorandum of Understanding established in 2022 between the State Great Khural of Mongolia and the IPU until 2025. Consequently, both parties unanimously expressed that the extension of the Memorandum signifies the expansion of cooperation between the two sides and the strengthening of mutual trust.
Under the Memorandum, the two sides will cooperate in three main areas: promoting the integration of human rights into parliamentary legislative processes and procedures; supporting a human rights-based approach in the operations, structures, and staff of Parliament; and strengthening gender-sensitive practices within Parliament. In November 2023, the State Great Khural of Mongolia and the IPU jointly conducted a self-assessment on human rights and gender sensitivity, which is one of the comprehensive measures organized under the Memorandum.
According to IPU standards, the State Great Khural of Mongolia became the 13th parliament to assess gender sensitivity. It was also the first parliament to conduct a self-assessment on human rights. This evaluation marked a significant event in the history of the Parliament of Mongolia, conducted under the observation and attention of parliaments worldwide. It was a special and important event where two separate contents were considered simultaneously and in relation to each other. During the Signing Ceremony, the two parties expressed efforts to expand relations and cooperation.
